What’s your trophy?
As a kid growing up in a sports-oriented household, I was always in pursuit of a trophy. The pursuit made its way through Little League Baseball to Pre-Teen Basketball and eventually into high school sports. I won my share, but I remember the ones that got away much more so than the ones I won.
In retrospect, now that I look back at that time, I view things differently. Sure, I may have some old dusty plastic trophies in some crumbling cardboard box in my parents’ attic. But now, for me, it was the setting of goals and the pursuit of victory that was my trophy. The effort was my trophy. The drive was my trophy.
As an adult (unless you are performing on ESPN on a regular basis) in the business world, there are very few “physical” trophies. Rather, we must pursue the metaphorical ones, the victories, the successes, the quick wins that prove our value. We will not be given a faux gold sports figure on a wooden base with green felt when we win these trophies. Instead, it will be the kudos, the personal satisfaction and the internal knowledge that you exceeded expectations. You will know that you delivered. You will know that you saw an obvious problem and you swiftly and effectively resolved it. You will know that you improved a flawed situation. You will know that your contribution helped achieve the desired outcome.
All too often, barriers get in the way. There are people, issues, limitations, etc. that impact you and your teams’ ability to win the trophy. There are people who are motivated by things other than simply doing what is right. There may be issues that prevent the process from getting started. There may be financial limitations. There may not be consensus on what the right course ought to be. You may encounter people who pursue no trophy. Some people prefer to do everything in their power to prevent your pursuit. Some people may feel their ineptitude may be exposed if the pursuit begins.
Kenway Consulting views the opportunity to assist in your pursuit of ethical and value-add trophies as our trophy, whether we are assisting in building consensus, assisting in the removal of barriers or quantifying the financial rationale for the pursuit of the trophy. We view our acumen in Management Consulting, be it IT Strategy, Program Management or Business Requirements Analysis, as a means by which we can return more value than our costs in order to expedite your pursuit of the trophy. We will do our part to identify the roadblocks and the detours around them. We will do our part to recognize the riddles and provide the keys to solve them. And we will identify the barriers and help you succeed despite them.
Throughout my career, I’ve managed to populate my metaphorical mantle with some trophies of which I am extremely proud. But like the trophies in my parents’ attic, they collect dust and people forget about them. But every so often, it is nice to pick them up and remember the results of the efforts. Especially the newer ones.
